Boiler servicing is one of those tasks that is easily and often overlooked. Many domestic boilers remain, hidden away in a cupboard or utility room, very rarely seen and thought about. Invariably, ‘they’ just get on and do the job required.

There are a number of reasons however why regular boiler checks should be carried out.

Regular servicing – what’s involved

Regular servicing will ensure the boiler is operating efficiently and help to keep it running safely.

So, what’s involved in a boiler service? A Gas Safe registered engineer will begin by inspecting the boiler and controls to make sure they’re working properly. They’ll then check for corrosion and leaks, ensuring the gas pressure is correct and test the flue to make sure it’s not emitting any unsafe fumes. The whole service should take about 30 minutes. When it is completed, the service engineer will leave you with a boiler checklist of information. Make sure this is kept safe for reference afterwards.

If left unattended small problems can escalate to become more significant issues. A regular service will ensure your boiler is running properly, detect and fix any minor problems to help avoid future malfunctions and potentially costly repairs. After all the last thing you want is a boiler to stop working when you need it most.

A faulty boiler is also extremely dangerous and can present a high risk of non-fire-related carbon monoxide poisoning.

Servicing saves money

During the boiler service, the service engineer will carry out a host of checks to make sure your boiler is working efficiently and effectively. An efficient boiler will cost less to run and ultimately save money over time.

How often and when?

Summer is the best time to have your boiler serviced, the boiler will then be prepared and ready for the onslaught of regular autumn/winter use. Service engineers also tend to be less busy during the summer months.

Many boiler warranties and some insurance policies, require a regular service to be completed to ensure the boiler is safe. An annual boiler service will meet most insurance policy requirements, although it is worth checking with your insurance provider to be sure.
