Overall, 74% of Brits have changed how they think about their homes over the last two years. As well as an increased desire for more outdoor space and natural light, UK homeowners now have a greater awareness of the environmental impact of buildings, and the importance of having a sustainable home.
A new awareness for environmental impact
In 2021, the UK Government revealed their Net Zero Strategy, a group of policies aimed at helping the UK reach net zero emissions by 2050. Homes are a crucial part of this plan, as they account for 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, the government has invested £3.9 billion into decarbonising existing buildings by fitting innovative heating systems and improving insulation.
At the same time, UK perspectives on sustainability have been rapidly changing over the last few years. On the whole, consumers are embracing environmentally-friendly options. Whether it be reconditioning their car engines or eating a vegan free diet. 32% of UK consumers are ‘highly engaged’ in adopting a more sustainable lifestyle, and 28% of consumers have stopped buying certain products because of environmental concerns.
A changing perspective on homes
This move towards sustainability is also evident in homeowners. A study from a leading property services group found that 70% of Brits want their property to be more eco-friendly, while 66% say they would actively choose a property with sustainability features over one without them.
An additional study from Samsung Electronics found that more than three-quarters of people say that sustainable homes should be a priority for everyone. Additionally, 79% of respondents said that environmental considerations are a priority when choosing where to live.
These studies prove that sustainable homes are no longer just a future concern. Instead, UK consumers are asking for environmentally-friendly homes today, and they should be available to everyone.
