While it sounds like something related to a noisy drainage system, “house burping” is a quirky name for a sensible German tradition known as Stoßlüften, or “shock ventilation”. What is ‘house burping’?
The concept is straightforward: instead of leaving a window slightly ajar all day, which allows heat to escape slowly and can chill internal walls, you simply open several windows about 10 minutes once every day. This helps prevent mould by purge a building of stale, CO2 and moisture-heavy air and replaces it with fresh, dry outdoor air. Because the burst is short, the “thermal mass” of your walls, floors, and furniture doesn’t have time to cool down. Once you close the windows, the fresh air quickly warms up without a massive spike in your heating bill.
From heritage to new-build
We work across all property types, and we have found moisture management is a universal challenge, though the reasons vary depending on the age of the home.
Period properties typically rely on “breathability.” Modern upgrades like double glazing and draught-proofing can inadvertently trap moisture that traditional materials (like lime and timber) were never meant to hold. “House burping” allows these homes to “exhale” that trapped humidity before it can settle.

Furthermore, homes can be full of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from cleaning products, perfumes, and even new furniture.
