Unfortunately, there are poor tradesmen in every industry, and the plumbing trade is no different. Stories abound of traders who have failed to show up, left work unfinished, made a mess or just failed to do the job properly. Are they a Plumber or Heating Engineer?
Typically, a plumber might be considered an ‘all-rounder’ who works on domestic water appliances such as taps, sinks, toilets etc. whereas a heating engineer deals with heating systems such as the boiler, thermostat, hot water cylinder and radiators.
Are they Gas Safe Registered?
All heating engineers have to complete specific training to be on the Gas Safe Register. This is an official list of gas engineers who are registered to work legally and safely on boilers and all other gas appliances. Gas Safe accreditation needs to be renewed every 4 years and ensures that your heating engineer is up to date and proves their trade experience and safety record.
Are there any other accreditation and certification schemes?
The Government endorsed Trustmark scheme offers a register of guaranteed, high-quality tradesman. Any plumber who joins the scheme must sign a strict code of conduct guaranteeing excellent trading practice, technical competence, and good customer service.
OFTEC operates an accreditation registration scheme for heating technicians working in liquid fuels, heat pumps, solar thermal, biomass and solid fuel.
A further accreditation scheme is provided by the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE). Although not a legal requirement, it does show that a plumber follows a code of professional practice and provides customers with a contact point for any complaints.
Are they reviewed online?
Check online review sites such as Trustpilot, Google Reviews and Facebook. These will often provide genuine word-of-mouth recommendations and examples of personal experience.
What is their level of experience?
While qualifications are important, using a plumber or heating engineer who has gained experience from ‘time-on-the-job’ is invaluable. A seasoned plumber will have experienced many issues and problems and will be able to offer solutions to overcome most challenges.
Customer expectation
Arriving in a corporate, sign written van, expect a genuine, professional plumber or heating engineer to be conscientious and polite. Attention to detail should be second nature.
Trust your gut
If you have any queries or niggling doubts when hiring a plumber, do not be afraid to ask questions. An honest, competent tradesman will be happy to talk about and discuss his previous jobs, especially if it means new business opportunity.
