When the nights start drawing in, we start using our homes more. But few of us realise that our homes need a little extra maintenance at this time of year, to mitigate the damaging impact of the cold weather outside. From ice dams in gutters to broken boilers, here are some of the most surprising ways that winter can damage your home.
Snow-damaged roofs
During heavy snowfall, the extra weight can cause stress to your roof and may even lead to buckling. Condensation and melting snow may also re-freeze, swelling in the process and resulting in leaks. Always clear snow from your roof if you can.
Ice dams in gutters
If you don’t clear your gutters before winter, the debris and ice can lead to dams which can pull the gutters loose or break off and hurt people in the street. Make sure your gutters are clear, and use a de-icing agent or heated gutter cable to melt the ice.
Falling trees
Winter storms and heavy icicles can lead to branches and whole trees falling over, causing damage to surrounding homes. Keep nearby trees trimmed short, and don’t plant trees too close to your house.
Leaky pipes
During winter, your plumbing is at risk. Water expands as it freezes, bursting pipes and causing leaks. Always insulate exposed pipes, and turn your taps to a slow drip during especially cold weather to keep water flowing.
Damp and rot
Since winters these days are often wet, and there’s less warmth and sunlight to evaporate moisture, your wooden door and window frames may suffer mould and become rotten if not treated in time. Prepare for winter by checking gaps and filling damaged areas with epoxy wood filler.
Cracked chimneys
As the bricks of your chimney expand and contract during temperature fluctuations, they may crack when water gets behind the mortar and freezes. Don’t forget to keep a close eye on your chimney, especially if you use your fireplace, and schedule touch-ups as soon as possible.
Plaster cracks
Dry, heated indoor air can cause problems in your plaster walls during winter as it dries out too much. Use a humidifier to help lessen the shrinkage, and fill small or large cracks as soon as they appear.
Broken boilers
Particularly cold spells which cause your pipes to freeze may damage your boiler if left unattended, cutting off the heating and hot water right when you need it most. Make sure your condensate pipes are always insulated and check your boiler regularly.
